Why does a double-acting cylinder have two ports?
Release Time :
2025-01-24
Double-acting cylinders have two dedicated ports that direct pressurized oil to either side of the piston, allowing for precisely controlled bi-directional extension and accurate retraction. This bi-directional capability requires a more complex design and additional seals.
The first port is where the advance (extend) hydraulic hose fitting is connected to the cylinder. The second port is where the retract hydraulic hose fitting is connected to the cylinder. In this case, hydraulic oil is used for both the retract and extend action within the cylinder, so no external force is required to return the piston rod.
With double-acting cylinders, the user needs to have full control of the mechanism because the part moves in two different directions without the need to manually return the piston rod. This means that the cylinders need to be checked regularly and monitored more closely than single-acting cylinders.
Advantages:
Better control of bi-directional motion
Faster operation and performance
More design variations available
Often meet ISO standards
Disadvantages:
Higher initial cost
Requires larger housing
Fluid consumption rates may vary
For simple one-way tasks, such as ejecting parts from a conveyor, a single-acting cylinder may be the better choice, but if you need speed, force, and precise control, a double-acting cylinder is a better choice
