What is a boom lift cylinder?

The lift cylinder in a crane is a very important part of the crane structurally. The outriggers keep the crane level and high off the ground. Much like the outriggers, the lift cylinders support the boom and all the parts associated with the boom, such as the load, boom, etc. The lift cylinder is an integral part of the crane. The lift cylinder provides an upward force that counteracts the downward force of the boom, load, etc. A lift cylinder is basically an actuator that provides a unidirectional force with a unidirectional stroke. The stroke of the cylinder determines how much force the lift cylinder can apply to the boom, i.e. how much angle the boom can increase. When the boom is at 0 degrees, the stroke of the cylinder is almost zero. When the stroke of the lift cylinder is close to the maximum length, the angle of the boom is the maximum angle allowed by the crane manufacturer. In most cases, the boom will not be angled more than 80 to 85 degrees. Hydraulic lift cylinders get their power from pressurized hydraulic oil. The cylinder is hollow and has a piston inside that is connected to a piston rod that moves back and forth. The piston is driven by a hydraulic pump that introduces a regulated flow of hydraulic oil into the system.

In the crane industry, some cranes have two lift cylinders, usually cranes with a capacity of 400 to 450 tons or more will have dual lift cylinders. Other cranes have only one. Older models, like the Grove LTM1500, have dual lift cylinders, but don't have a lift capacity of 400 tons. As engineering technology has changed over time, lift cylinders have increased in strength and power. Without lift cylinders, you would need another way to pull back the tip of the boom to counteract the force pulling the boom toward the ground. Think Egyptian times.
